L&B It Girl 2015 :: Abby Rogers

Every year at Lee&Birch we hold an open vote competition on Facebook to search for the next "It Girl," and this year's winner by popular demand is Abby Rogers! We asked Abby a few questions about the life of an "It Girl," and had a blast getting to know her during her shoot! We hope you do, too...

"I am so excited to be this year's "It Girl" for Lee & Birch! Let me tell you a little bit about me:
I am a wife to a military man, mother to 2 kiddos (ages 3 and 4) and owner of a chunky, lovable pug dog! I work as a surgical physician assistant at Mercy Health Saint Mary's doing cancer surgery. I also own my own photography prop business! Yes, I know that sounds busy. And you're right, it is busy! But I wouldn't have it any other way."

Something I do in my spare time... What spare time?? Haha, I edit a lot of photos. And I like to knit. I now mostly knit items for all the newborns that I photograph. I also am involved in two clubs that meet every other month to stamp and make cards! I know that this is starting to make me sound like Martha Stewart but that's pretty much my mom. She is one truly crafty lady and I get it all from her :)

My favorite way to wear denim is… with holes in them. I love a comfortable, worn pair that also looks good with a blouse. I love being able to dress up and down at the same time on the weekends.

Look One: Central Park West Fringe Wrap | Olive & Oak Olive’s Plaid Shirt | AG Legging Ankle in 11 years | Dex Slug | Cimber necklace

When I can’t figure out what to wear, I…
typically throw on a denim shirt and colored skinnies. I am a HUGE fan of color and have all sorts of colors of skinny jeans and cords. A denim shirt is easy to pair with any color bottoms so if I toss that on then I can easily add an accessory necklace/scarf or in the colder weather a sweater over the denim. I love how easy it is to later with a really great denim button down.

My daily theme song could be… Best day of my life by American Authors. It's up beat, feel good, and I'm a firm believer that your mind is a powerful thing - You should start out the day rejoicing that its a new day and really believe it is going to be a good one!

Headliners at your dream music festival: Oh, that is tough... I love people that I can rock out to and lip sync to, so I would say Paramore, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Florence and The Machine. I like rock and roll, but it's the female vocalists that really does it for me!

Look Two: Central Park West Fringe Scarf Sweater | DL 1961 Margaux Hail | Fur Collar Stroller in Grey | Lat & Lo necklace

Favorite Fall trend this season:
I love to mix materials and textures. Mixing fur, leather and patterns? ugh, to die for! Add that together with bringing back more military style? LOVE!

My style icon is… Audrey Hepburn. I love a feminine style that is timeless and charming.

Your 'good read' recommendation: I just finished Girl on the Train. It was a page turner - just as everyone said. I still think Gone Girl was pretty amazing in the way it kept you constantly guessing. Loved it!

My friends would describe my style as…
Someone once described my style as 'Nantucket.' Not really sure if that was more of a comment to a preppy style or just that it was more of 'lake life' look. I can't deny how much I adore the navy, nautical trend and personally felt like I could live in linen white pants this summer!

But I’d describe my style as… Colorful, Classy, with a *hint* of trends. My everyday-wear is for seeing patients at the hospital, I want to fuse professional with fun while I'm there. On the weekends its all about comfort. I run around chasing my own toddlers and the additional toddlers that I shoot for family photos. I like to throw on comfortable yet cute tees/sweaters with skinny cords/pants and boots.

Look Three: Weston Jerri Caning Lace Dress  | Hipanema Bracelets | John & Jenn Manon Cardi in Grey Vision

My style rule is… "There is no reason to wear ugly shoes." Just because you want something to be comfortable doesn't mean it can't be cute. For flats, I love color and comfort and often time pick something fun from Oka-B. For heels, you just have to find your comfort-height, not everyone can walk in 3 inch heels all day but I have plenty of heels that I could dance in all night long. Keep searching, I know you'll find them!

What was your favorite outfit during the shoot? I just loved ALL my outfits but if you are making me choose one, I would say the plaid dress and longer fur vest with ankle boots. It makes a statement, incorporates so many of my favorites this fall, and makes me feel good. It was fun to wear that vest and kept me warm ( I am always cold!! ) When I was walking down the street, sipping hot chocolate for the shoot, people looked at me and I felt like I was truly a model. Amazing how an outfit can make you feel confident and sexy just... like... that!

Favorite Fall accessories: Um, have I mentioned Fur!? I also am in LOVE with ankle boots. You can't have enough. I would also add in a detail of sparkle... a brooch in your hair, scarf, or sweater is a nice way to add a bit of glitz!

Look Four: Every-Wear Vest in Arctic Leopard | Bella Dahl Cloudy Pocket Dress | Hipanema bracelet

Where you're likely to find me when I'm not working: Throughout the summer I'd say on the beach. This summer my kids (especially Austin who is 4) really learned how to love the water. We have a lake in our backyard and it provides endless entertainment for the kids - and for me and my husband. I love watching them play. We get to watch the sun as it sets most nights. It's our little piece of Heaven.

A quirky daily habit of mine is… drinking a glass of chocolate milk for breakfast every day.

Your favorite word/phrase: "lovely lady." I used to call everyone lady, like 'Hey lady," and somewhere along the line that changed to "Hey lovely lady." But I love it. I love reminding women in my life how truly lovely they are. If you haven't noticed, I'm corny too.

3 Instagram feeds I double-tap daily… other than Lee&Birch?! West Elm, Anthropologie, and NatGeo

A day isn’t complete until I… laugh. I absolutely love to laugh and make others laugh as well. I have been known to pull out accents here and there. My most requested is a Minnesotan accent. Don't cha know.

Goals for 2016: Oh man. Goals. I would say one of my top goals is finding Balance. I need to learn how to balance the two jobs that I have so that I can give the best of myself to my family. When I get busy with photography, I let myself work early in the morning and late at night. I need to have nights where I just let that part go. It's hard to turn that part off when it's at your fingertips!

Look Five: Check Flyaway jacket | Leather Insert Lysee legging | Central Park West Ruffle Tee Blouse

Huge thanks to Mani Aghababian of Fusion Salon for designing hair & makeup, Kristin Nipke for allowing us to shoot in her beautiful downtown Grand Rapids loft, L&B Stylist Sarah Winslow for choosing the collections, & especially Abby for taking the time to be featured as our L&B "It Girl" 2015!
